Asparagus Producers
from Koo-Wee-Rup, VIC
a family tradition
our story
Charlie Motta acquired his first 22-acre plot in the regained Koo-Wee-Rup
swamp in 1964 and initially produced vegetables. The big change happened in the
late 70s, when he, along with 3 other growers, attempted to produce
asparagus on a large scale. In the 90s, there were over 60 asparagus growers in
the area, but the number decreased dramatically to 5 growers due to the labour-intensive
nature of the production, which still requires a lot of non-mechanised work.
What we produce
Motta and son persevered in their efforts and have now about 800 acres of land
entirely devoted to asparagus.
