The Motta

VICTORIA

Charlie Motta acquired his first 22-acre plot in the regained Koo-Wee-Rup swamp in 1964 and initially produced vegetables. The big change happened in the late 70s, when he, along with 3 other growers, attempted to produce asparagus on a large scale. In the 90s, there were over 60 asparagus growers in the area, but the number decreased dramatically to 5 growers due to the labour-intensive nature of the production, which still requires a lot of non-mechanised work.

The Faranda

VICTORIA

Born in Montalbane di Cona, at the foot of the Etna, Antonino arrived in Australia with his family in October 1948. Having been living in Werribee since then, they bought their first 60 acres of land in 1951. The land was later divided in four blocks, and Tony kept 20 acres, an extension of land that is hard to manage due to the labour-intensive work required.

The Corsini

VICTORIA

Born in Bagni di Lucca, Gino Corsini started working as canecutter in Queensland. Facing health complications due to leptospirosis, contracted in the cane fields, he moved to Mareeba, Victoria, in 1953, where he met Carmel in 1957, and got married in 1958. After running a fish and chips business in Wangaratta, he share-farmed tobacco in Eurobin in 1965. After acquiring a plot of land in King Valley in 1969, he became an exclusive tobacco producer until 1994.

The Puopolo

VICTORIA

My family migrated here in 1965 from Anzano, a commune in the province of Foggia, southern Italy. All the family came at the same time, from both my mother’s and father’s side. My father was about 13 years of age when he arrived, and he started working in the meat industry straight after arriving, alongside several other migrants. He worked there until the age of 18, until my grandfather Vitangelo said he wanted to start a business of his own, so in 1978 they opened the butcher shop in Norlane, Geelong. They sold European imported products like tomatoes, olives, fetta cheese, and pasta, which were very sought-after goods in the area, as there were many European immigrants in that region back then.

"Our purpose is to understand the influence of Italian immigrants in shapping regional Victoria's agricultural industry and communities ."
